| Monica Caivano, the beating heart behind Esquina Tango Cultural Society of Austin, is a young and vibrant Latin woman who immigrated from Argentina with her parents to Austin at the age of 17. Every year in college Monica had to write an essay describing her dreams, about what she wanted to do with her life in the future…Every year she wrote about being an educator and creating a cultural place where dance, arts, and culture would bring people together. Monica started working in East Austin in 1999 for the Aztlan Dance Company as a dancer and as a prolific tango instructor. That experience changed and enriched her life. It allowed her to enter a wonderful world and meet people proud of their history and working for their future. Monica believes in the wealth of history and culture that exists here in Austin. There is no question that her dream belongs to East Austin and it could become a place where the neighbors could feel part of and proud of belonging. Monica has already cultivated a devout family of tango enthusiasts, and strives only to share her passion of the dance and her culture with all who surround her. |
