Featured artists:MUSICIANS Glover Gill performs the passionate and captivating traditional music of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Drawing on arrangements from the Golden Age of Tango, the group combines faithful renditions of early 20th century tangos, milongas, and waltzes with original compositions in the classic style. Oro Viejo breathes new life into classic Rumba Flamenca. Their signature sound mixes electric and acoustic instruments and draws from many musical styles including: Cuban Son, Brazilian Choro, and American Jazz. The members of the group contribute musical backgrounds forged in the countries of Algeria, Mexico and the United States to a new musical language that transcends stylistic and cultural boundaries. The show begins with a performance by The Christian Fernandez and Sandra Leija Flamenco Duo. The Austin Piazzolla Quintet is an Austin based tango quintet specializing in the music of renowned Argentine ango composer, Astor Piazzolla. The Quintet was founded in 2009 and includes accordionist Mike Maddux, violinist James Anderson, pianist Jonathan Geer, guitarist Adam Carney, and bassist Christina Underwood. A unique and influential composer, Astor Piazzolla boldy blends elements of classical music and jazz with his native tango - creating a fantastic sound full of melody, passion, and heart-ache. Acadêmicos da Ópera is a group of more than 50 drummers and dancers in Austin, Texas, specializing in the music and dance of Brazil. Patterned after the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, we bring the music, movement, color, pageantry and joy of Carnaval in Rio to parades, festivals and special events throughout the region. Soniquete along with Luis Angel Ibañez is an Austin music scene-maker forming various ensembles with whom he experiments amongst rich rhythms and colorful melodies. Angel is particularly passionate about the folk music from Latin America such as Son, Rumba and Cha-Cha-Cha of the Caribbean, Waino and Taquirari of the highlands of the Andes, Seis Por Derecho of the plains of Los Llanos and Mariachi songs from his homeland, Mexico. DANCERS Rebekah Fowler (samba dancer) is an avid student of Afro-Brazilian dance since 1995, Rebekah Fowler continues to study and share the dance traditions found in Bahia, Rio and beyond. Since 2000, she has taught dancers how to samba like they do it in Brazil, focusing on footwork, technique and the spirit of "alegria e charme" (joy and charm). Recently returned from the UK, she currently dances with the Acadêmicos da Ópera Samba School in Austin. Gustavo Simplis and Monica Caivano (tango dancers) natives from Buenos Aires, carry tango in their blood. Monica & Gustavo are known for their energetic, highly rhythmic and elegant dancing. Their expressive dance style is filled with emotion. From drama and passion to humor and playfulness Gustavo and Monica fully connect with each other and the audience. Almost 2 years ago, Monica & Gustavo created, EsquinaTango, where they organize events, teach and perform. Jason Lozada (salsa dancer) was born to a Puerto Rican father in the Army and a native Texan mother, found his passion for Latin dances watching a young couple dance salsa in a talent competition in Washington DC in 1995. It was soon after that that he was taking his first lesson from his aunt in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Since then Jason has performed and competed at numerous events around the state of Texas. David Alvarez (salsa instructor) has been teaching salsa since 1994. He is all about dancing and getting into the groove. He makes it fun and keeps it social and energetic combining different rhythm through such us: merengue, Afro-Caribbean and salsa from different countries (Cuba, Colombia, etc) Jamie Lynn Shelton (belly dance performer) has been bellydancing since 1994 when she fell head over heels in love with Middle Eastern Music. The drum rhythms and soulful quality of the music are her inspiration when dancing. A bellydancers ultimate goal is for the audience to feel as if the music is coming from the dancer, that she (or he) is not just dancing to it, but is it. She has studied with a variety of notable teachers from around the world, her first teacher being Pat Taylor from right here in Austin. She has taught bellydancing basics and intermediate classes in San Marcos at Texas State University as well as community classes. She regularly performs at Kapella's Greek Cafe in New Braunfels and was a regular performer at Ararat Restaurant in Austin for almost 10 years. MOVIE “Tango” directed by Carlos Saura: Mario Suarez launches himself into the making of the ultimate film about Tango. Using poignant, beautifully stirring tango music as a source of inspiration, Mario searches to find a narrative thread which will hold it all together. Images of his own life (his successful career, his mid-life crisis, his ex-wife) converge in Mario's movie, revolving around riveting dance numbers of requited and unrequited love. The dance in the film then takes center stage, expressing love and hate, life and art, the sins of the past and the hope for the future.
