 | About UT South American Music Ensemble: The UT South American Music Ensemble is made up of music and non music majors at UT as well as members of the greater Austin community. Our repertoire explores a wide range of musical genres including traditional huaynos from Peru and Bolivia, indigenous festival music performed on tarkas (wooden flutes), Colombian bambucos, Afro-Peruvian music, Venezuelan joropos, Argentinian zambas and chacareras, among others. We sing in Spanish, Aymara, and Quechua, and we encourage general and enthusiastic participation, true to the spirit of participatory music making throughout South America. Our group’s mission is to share the music and culture of South America with the public through performances and music workshops. Our panpipes workshop for all ages at Esquina Tango (6:00-6:30 p.m.) will focus on Andean sikus, also known as zampoñas. These instruments are versatile and allow general audience participation and enjoyment in music making right away. Our method also invites participants to explore through music, concepts of reciprocity and duality central to Andean performance aesthetics. And by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to join in with the band!
